If you have a Nokia N9 with the PR1.3 firmware installed, perhaps you’ve faced this issue yet. In other words, the Gallery app doesn’t show anything but just pics you take with your camera, no screenshots or images downloaded or received.

I want to share this with you because I went crazy figuring out how to fix this issue and at last I had to reset my baby. But with this trick, you won’t lose any contact or message, if you are wondering.

So, a file browser and a plain text editor are all you need. This is step-by-step what I did, feel free to suggest shorter paths.

1) Open the text editor on your Linux, Windows, Mac, FreeBSD or wherever you want (even your own N9) and copy-paste this:

# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're
# interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run
# Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
# homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
# absolute path. No other format is supported.
#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs/Downloads"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs/Documents"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs/Music"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs/Pictures"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/MyDocs/Movies"

2) Save your file as user-dirs.dirs.txt and copy it into your device
3) Open your file browser and go to /home/user/.config/
4) Delete the user-dirs.dirs file placed there
5) Past your user-dirs.dirs.txt file and rename it as user-dirs.dirs
6) Reboot your N9
7) Et voilà! You’ve done!

Remember that this won’t allow you to see your saved pics and screenshots. To see them in your Gallery, move them into your computer before you start and then again into your device after you apply the trick.

Hope this can be useful to you, cheers!

  1. Open your file browser and go to /home/user/.config/ — i dont get this line can tell me in simple words step by step it’s just a request.

    1. All this part:

      # This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
      # If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you’re
      # interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run
      # Format is XDG_xxx_DIR=”$HOME/yyy”, where yyy is a shell-escaped
      # homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR=”/yyy”, where /yyy is an
      # absolute path. No other format is supported.

      XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR=”$HOME/MyDocs/Downloads”
      XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR=”$HOME/MyDocs”
      XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR=”$HOME/MyDocs”
      XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR=”$HOME/MyDocs/Documents”
      XDG_MUSIC_DIR=”$HOME/MyDocs/Music”
      XDG_PICTURES_DIR=”$HOME/MyDocs/Pictures”
      XDG_VIDEOS_DIR=”$HOME/MyDocs/Movies”

      1. im using filebox and it does’nt want to past in .config so is there a beter file browser because filebox is pissing me of

      2. @caswill

        It sound quite weird, since I used FileBoc for copying that file. You can download QAD File Manager and Dfilebrowser from the Store – I’ve never used any of them though.

  2. I actually tried the so called gallerybugx, re-starting tracker (-r command), and other stuff. Only thing that worked was downloading a picture directly into home/user/MyDocs/DCIM with Opera Mini… and it was read in the Gallery. After that, I copied all of my pics from …/Pictures to …/DCIM and they appeared in the Gallery. Now, I can download or transfer from my PC directly into either of the two files and the Gallery reads them!

    1. It works in that way because looks like the tracker settings file gets corrupted and only the DCIM folder remains in the settings.

      Have you moved your pictures from phone to pc before to start?

  3. Yes, I tried to follow your instructions to the letter, but either I did something wrong, or it just didn’t work for me. I thought also that the tracker was the problem, but not even resetting it (and losing my contacts in the process) worked… Hopefully, my gallery will continue functioning the way it should!

    1. I’m sorry it didn’t worked for you. Anyway, your contacts are still there, if you connect the phone to the Nokia Suite, you should be still able to see and copy them.

      1. First, this solution solve the main problem.
        But, indeed, I have the same problem that the pics that I take doesn’t appear in the Gallery. After a good time, it reappear. I think it’s a pb of refreshing the Gallery. You have to be patient or reboot each time your phone!
